“Light the House”

A look behind-the-scenes of The Smith Center REOPENING

“For the first time in 482 days, here’s our que: light the house.” The words of Myron Martin, President and CEO of The Smith Center, sent chills up our backs and led to tears in our eyes. Seeing the house lights back on inside The Smith Center was one of the most beautiful moments we’ve had in awhile. Not only was it a sign that theatre is coming back, but it was also a reminder that after the darkness – there is light.

It was an exciting day for the venue, but also a momentous occasion for the theatre world with the announcement that AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN will make its world premiere at The Smith Center before its Broadway debut. This October, guests can see a new adaptation of the Oscar-winning film as a reimagined jukebox musical (we’re only slightly freaking out!).

Producer Steve Gabriel said it best when he announced, “We feel like we’re coming home.” The Smith Center is known for giving a home to highly-successful shows, world-renown performers and iconic productions – so we are thrilled to see new and exciting events on the lineup!

AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN will feature a score showcasing some of our favorite 1980s classic hits. With songs selected by Dan Lipton, choreography from Patricia Wilcox and the new play adaptation by Tony Award-nominee Dick Scanlan, the show is sure to bring Broadway back to life at The Smith Center.

We were treated to a sneak peek performance with 5 of the talented leading cast members. Let’s just say that this show will have you singing and dancing along to your favorite 80s hits while pulling you into the rich emotional storyline.

The best thing about the arts? You get all emotions in one experience from the moment the orchestra begins to warm up. We’re so grateful to have a venue like The Smith Center in Las Vegas and are counting down the days until the new season begins this fall.

Intermission is officially over.

Broadway shows now on sale at The Smith Center include CATS (Oct. 12-17), the record-breaking musical spectacular by Andrew Lloyd Webber, AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN (Oct. 26-31) and A CHRISTMAS CAROL (Nov. 23-28), Dickens’ timeless tale of redemption featuring 12 cherished Christmas carols.
